Bracken Ghyll Golf Club hits the mark with national golf award

Bracken Ghyll Golf Club, Addingham is backing the drive to grow the game and has won a national award from England Golf.

Bracken Ghyll, Golf Club an 18 hole course situated in the picturesque Wharfe Valley has been awarded England Golf’s prestigious Golf Mark

GolfMark is an official seal of approval for clubs which successfully work to develop the game in four ways:

  • By attracting new members and encouraging existing members to play more
  • Using practical business planning to develop the club
  • Offering coaching and playing opportunities for all golfers
  • Ensuring safeguarding policies are in place

Bracken Ghyll has created links with local sports clubs and schools to encourage people to take up the game. Coaching courses have been popular during the summer, especially among the younger players. Under 12s can now join the club for free. Other initiatives include a review of the 18- 30 membership category which has been extended to age 35.

The club is now launching its popular winter deal which gives 18 months’ membership for £799, £300 now with the balance on April 1st.

Dave Gilbert, who led the club’s push to Golf Mark, said: Bracken Ghyll is a challenging course where medal rounds average 3.40 hours and rarely closes due to bad weather. A great club, it’s very friendly, welcoming and forward-thinking. This award helps us to spread the message and to let people know that we are a well run club with proper practises in place. A Club that caters for all levels of age and ability.

The award was presented to Bracken Ghyll by Tom Freeland, the County Development Officer for the Yorkshire golf development group, which works to grow the game.  “I’m delighted that Bracken Ghyll has achieved GolfMark and that its efforts to grow the game can be nationally recognised.”

The GolfMark award was developed by England Golf and also integrates Sport England’s Clubmark award – a national standard for quality sports clubs recognised across the country.

GolfMark brings a number of benefits to clubs including raising awareness, access to funding, business and marketing support and training opportunities for staff and volunteers.
